1. About Shanghai University
Shanghai University is a member university of Project 211, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education
and Shanghai Municipality and is a research-intensive and comprehensive university.
Shanghai University has 26 colleges and 2 independent departments, covering a wide range of
disciplines: natural science, engineering, literature, history, philosophy, economics, law, management,
art, etc.
There are more than 40000 full-time students in Shanghai University, including 3201 international
students from more than 150 countries.

before the 15th of the month (including the 15th day) shall be entitled to the full monthly stipend. If
registered after the 15th of the month, half a month's stipend shall be paid. Stipend of the graduates
shall be paid half a month after the date of graduation. If the scholarship student has left China for
more than 15 days due to personal reasons during his/her study period (except normal public holidays),
his/her stipend during that time shall be suspended.

4. Scholarship Eligibility
The applicants are qualified for scholarship selection only after they get pre-admission in applying
relevant majors. Online application website: http://apply.shu.edu.cn . For details, please see the Guide
of Application for Admission for Undergraduate/ Master/PhD Program.
4.1 Basic eligibility
To be eligible, applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with a valid ordinary-type passport, and in
good health.
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, those who immigrated to other
countries from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and applying to study in Shanghai
University as international students, should meet the following additional requirements: the
applicants must hold valid passport or other relevant international recognized documents for at least
4 years; meanwhile, in the latest 4 years (by each April 30th of the year of University registration),
the applicants must have lived overseas for 2 years (Living overseas for 9 months can be converted to
1 year, which is subject to the exit-entry stamp on visa.).
4.2 Language Proficiency Certificate
4.2.1 If you are applying for Chinese-taught programs, HSK certificates within two years are
required (HSK refers to Chinese Proficiency Test. You can find information on:
www.chinesetest.cn):
HSK 5 with the score 210 or above for majors in Science or Engineering, Economics or
Management and Art;
HSK 6 with the score 180 or above for majors in Humanities.
? HSK Exemptions
The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the HSK:
? Native speaker of Chinese;
? The previous degree is fully taught in Chinese.
4.2.2 If you are applying for English-taught programs:
IELTS (A) 6.5 or TOEFL IBT 90 or above received within the recent two years(TOEFL
MyBestTM Score accepted).
Other internationally recognized English proficiency tests with scores of the same level and
provide proof of certificates.
? TOEFL or IELTS Exemptions
The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS:
? Native speakers of English;
? The previous degree is fully taught in English.
4.3 Academic Requirement
4.3.1 For Bachelor’s Programs
? High school graduate, GPA 3.0 or above(Note: 4-Point GPA System);
? For Science or Engineering programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics and physics in high
school; For Economics or Management programs, applicants are qualified in mathematics in high
school; For Arts programs, applicants are required to submit the portfolio.
? Applicants should be no older than 25 years old.
4.3.2 For Master’s Programs
? Be a bachelor’s degree holder;
Graduates who did not receive their degree certificates at the time of application should provide
pre-graduation certificates issued by their schools or colleges to prove their ability to graduate
smoothly and obtain their degree certificates by July 2021.
? Have relevant undergraduate academic background or have completed undergraduate-level
courses relevant to intended graduate major, GPA 2.5 or above(Note: 4-Point GPA System).
? Accepted by a prospective professor at Shanghai University
Choose supervisor online when choosing a major in the online application system and get
accepted by a prospective professor.
Please note that it is not required to choose supervisor for the following Master’s programs:
School of Economics, MBA center and SILC Business School. The colleges will arrange soon
after they register at Shanghai University.
? Students applying to programs of arts must have relative academic background and submit a
portfolio.
? Applicants should be no older than 35 years old.
4.3.3 For PhD’s Programs
? Be a Master’s degree holder;
Graduates who did not receive their degree certificates at the time of application should provide
pre-graduation certificates issued by their schools or colleges to prove their ability to graduate
smoothly and obtain their degree certificates by July 2021.
? Have relevant master's degree background and relevant academic achievements,GPA 3.0 or
above (Note: 4-Point GPA System).
? Accepted by a prospective professor at Shanghai University
Choose supervisor online when choosing a major in the online application system and get
accepted by a prospective professor.
Please note that it is not required to choose supervisor for the following Master’s programs:
School of Economics, MBA center and SILC Business School. The colleges will arrange soon
after they register at Shanghai University.
? Students applying to programs of arts must have relative academic background and submit a
portfolio.
? Applicants should be no older than 45 years old.
4.4 No other type of scholarship was granted at the time of application.
5. Scholarship Application Materials
The following materials should be prepared with complete and clear electronic versions.
? ID photo
Recent bareheaded (within six months), full-face, blue-color background, one-inch certificate photo
(390*570), instead of landscape photos or photos of daily life; in JPG format, less than 100K.
? Passport copy
A clear copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue,
date of expiry;
Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home country.
? Selfie video
A video including self-introduction and study plan in China shot by the applicants. (within 50M, avi,
mov, mp4 all accepted) The language of the video is up to the medium of instruction in the selected
major (English or Chinese).
? Highest Degree Certificate and Official Transcripts
The official certificate and transcripts are those that bear the facsimile signature of the registrar and
seal of the issuing institution. If the originals are not in Chinese or English, they must be translated
and notarized;
*For applicants who haven’t graduated, pending graduation certificate and transcripts available till
the application date are also acceptable. Official graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades
shall be submitted timely after being received.
? Language Proficiency Certificate
If the score sheet is not available at the time of application, applicants may upload a screen shot of
your scores. But the original score sheet is required when registration.
? Statement of Financial Support (You can download at http://apply.shu.edu.cn)
? Two Letters of Recommendation with Signature
Written in English or Chinese by two different professors or associate professors from previous
academic institutions, or work supervisors, etc.
The referee’s signature and contact information are necessary.
? Choose Supervisor online and Get Accepted (For post-graduate only)
Please note that it is not required to choose supervisor for School of Economics.
? Study Plan or Research Proposal in China
Written in English or Chinese (according to the teaching language of the program), more than 800
words, including research achievements so far (e.g. title and abstracts of graduation thesis or
published paper), reasons of choosing SHU, study and research plan, future career plan, etc.
? Certificate of No Criminal Record
Note: for any applicants who cannot get the Certificate of No Criminal Record at home country,
please sign the No criminal record Commitment with Shanghai University (You can download at
http://apply.shu.edu.cn).
? Academic Research Documents (Refer to Departmental standards)
★ Publication of academic papers and patent certificate, Note: Applicants who apply for a Ph.D. in
the School of Management must have a background in management science or science and
engineering and have published at least one academic paper in SCI or SSCI journals at the time of
application.
★ Applicants for art majors should provide at least two examples of artworks;
? Honorary certificates (please merge into one PDF file for more than one file)
6. Scholarship Application Methods
6.1 Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
China Scholarship Council, entrusted by the Ministry of Education of China, is responsible for the
enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship programs. Programs listed
below are applicable to certain target prospective students. For more information, please refer to
www.campuschina.org .
6.1.1 Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)--- Regular Programs(Type A)
Program Category Type A generally refers to scholarship programs responsible by authorities other
than Chinese universities. Applicants of Type A programs are requested to fill in the ‘Agency
Number’ of above-mentioned agencies (e.g. Chinese Embassy in your country). Applications of Type
A will be reviewed by these agencies. The agency number of Shanghai University is 10280.
(1) When to apply
Generally, from the beginning of January to the beginning of April. For the exact dates, please
consult the accordingly receiving agency listed above.
(2) Application Procedures
? Shanghai University Security and Background Check (SBC) for International Students
The purpose of SBC is to check whether the applicant’s personal condition is appropriate to enter
the University. It includes questions about the applicant's personal life, education background and
physical health. Please answer according to authentic situation and the results will be recorded by
university.
? University Qualification Assessment (UQA) for International Students
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate whether international students are ready to enter
Shanghai University for degree programs and it is only compulsory for individual international
applicants of degree programs.
The test is taken in the system: http://apply.shu.edu.cn, and results will be taken as an important
reference for admission. For details, please see the graphic below:

? Telephone interview
After SBC and UQA, the recruitment staff will organize a telephone interview. The interview
language is up to course teaching language and time length is 10-15 minutes.
? Expert Committee Interview
Besides the telephone interview, the other interview will be taken by Shanghai University’s
experts for all graduates. The interview will be arranged once a week, which will be informed in
advance.
(3) Application Results
? The applicants may inquire about the admission results from the overseas student dispatching
departments of their own countries. After review and approval of the China Scholarship
Council (CSC), the final admission results will be sent back to the program accepting agencies
and then pass on to applicants. The applicants may inquire the results from the relevant
scholarship acceptance agency.
? The China Scholarship Council will send the list of admissions, the admission notice and the
visa application form for overseas students (JW201 Form) to the Chinese embassy (or
Consulate-General) of the relevant countries by July 31. And then pass on to the International
Student Dispatch Departments or the applicants.
Note:
CSC will transfer the approved application materials to Shanghai University for admission. CSC has
the right to make appropriate adjustments to the University, major, funding category and
scholarship duration, and the University shall determine the admission result. For the application
materials with the admission notice of Shanghai University, CSC will send them directly to Shanghai
University for confirmation. Applicants who are admitted by Shanghai University will receive
Chinese government scholarship to study in China upon the approval of CSC. Each scholarship
applicant can only receive one kind of scholarship from the CSC program.
6.1.2 Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)-: Chinese University Program (Type B)
Program Category Type B generally refers to scholarship programs responsible by Chinese
universities under CGS-Chinese University Program.

5) Application Results

The results of the proposed admission will be published online from mid-to-late June of 2021
(http://apply.shu.edu.cn). The final result of the scholarship admission is based on the paper
admission materials.

6.3 Shanghai University New International Student Scholarship
Only for Master’s and Doctoral programs. No need to apply separately. The scholarship recipients
are selected from the applicants of Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) - Chinese University
Program and Shanghai Government Scholarship.
6.4 Confucius Institute Scholarship
The application of Confucius institute scholarship please refers to the website of Confucius
Institute: http://cis.chinese.cn.
7. Others
7.1 Scholarship candidates should register on time. For late registration, please inform the contact
person and submit the leave application, or your offer will be cancelled;
7.2 Scholarship candidates should bring all original documents for registration. Provision of any
false/ misleading information or failure to provide the requested supporting documents will lead to
disqualification of admission.
7.3 Scholarship students should apply for the annual review, which evaluates the study performance
and daily performance for one academic year. Students who passed the annual review will be awarded
with the scholarship next year.
7.4 Scholarship students cannot change the major, transfer to another university, or prolongthe length
of study in principle.
7.5 Those items shall be explained by the college of International Education, Shanghai University.

Policies on Tuition Deposit Payment for Shanghai University International Students
1. About Tuition Deposit Payment
All applicants of degree programs must pay the tuition fees deposit after receiving the E-admission
notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not completed after 20 days, it would be regarded as
giving up.

After payment, please log in to the application system, click "Tuition Deposit Payment", and upload
the payment receipt online. After being confirmed by working staff, paper admission documents will

1.4 Self-fund degree students shall pay the rest of the tuition fees when registration. For scholarship
degree students whose scholarship covers full tuition fee, deposit will be returned to Chinese bank
cards according to refund policy.
1.5 The following types of students can be exempted from paying the tuition deposit:
a) Chinese government scholarship students (Program Category Type A only); Program
Category Type A generally refers to scholarship programs responsible by authorities other than
Chinese universities. Applicants of Type A programs are requested to fill in the ‘Agency Number’

2. Refund Policy
This information refers to applicants who have paid deposit for degree programs at Shanghai
University.
2.1 The deposit is non-refundable except the circumstances outlined below.
a. Withdrawing your application within 30 days after the successful deposit payment to
Shanghai University bank account. The actual paid amount will be refunded to your Chinese
bank accounts only in RMB. The service fee and the exchange rate difference will be charged.
b. University cancels program
If the University cancels program for which the applicant has accepted an offer, then all fees paid
will be refunded to the applicant’s Chinese bank accounts only in RMB.
c. Refusal of a student visa
Those who fail to get visa due to non-personal reasons and provide the official statement of visa
rejection from the embassy or consulate before the deadline of registration (11 Sep, 2021), the
actual paid amount will be refunded to your Chinese bank accounts only in RMB. The service
fee and the exchange rate difference will be charged.
d. Scholarship Students who have paid deposit
The scholarship students whose scholarship covers full tuition fee can get refund based on the
actual amount that university has received to Chinese bank accounts only in RMB after
registration at Shanghai University. The service fee and the exchange rate difference will be
charged.
2.2 The deposit is non-refundable in the following circumstances:
a. Withdrawing your application after 30 days after the successful deposit payment to
Shanghai University bank account. The deposit will not be refunded.
b. Admitted Students but never enrolled
For any admitted students who paid tuition fee deposit, but never enrolled at Shanghai University,
the deposit will not be refunded.
c. Those who fail to apply visa due to personal reasons, the deposit will not be refunded;
d. Current Students who transfer out or withdraw
The current students who apply for university transfer or withdrawal after registration will not get
refund.
3. Refund Procedures
3.1 For applicants who meet the Refund Policies listed above
Fill in the refund application form (refer to the template), and then submit to International Students
Admissions Office with the following:
? Copy of passport
? Copy of Chinese Bank account information
? Copy of Opening Bank information
? Copy of Payment receipt
? Others (visa rejection statement from the embassy or consulate etc.)
Please note that it take at least 90 working days to deal with the refund process.
3.2 Enrolled Scholarship Students
After registration, the scholarship students should provide payment receipt, Chinese bank account and
opening bank information. Deposit will be returned to student’s account by financial department
always in November.
